Is Ketogenic diet a good solution to obesity?

  1. Standard Ketogenic Diet (SKD): this is a general diet with low carb, high fat, and very moderate protein. It usually has a ratio of 75% fat, 20% protein, and only 5% carbs.
  2. Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD): this type of ketogenic diet gives us some days to recover carb diet i.e. it allows us to have some days where we can have high carb diets, such as 5 ketogenic diet days followed by 2 high-carb diet days.
  3. Targeted Ketogenic Diet (TKD): this diet gives us the option of adding carbs during the workout sessions.
  4. High-protein ketogenic diet: this diet has more protein in it. The ratio of different substances is generally 60% fat, 35% protein, and 5% carbs.
How does ketogenic diet for obesity work?

As we know it’s a low carb high-fat diet. When we start the ketogenic diet for obesity, the glucose rate starts dropping in our body because of low carb intake. In this case, our body starts switching to its secondary energy source which is fat. Our liver starts producing ketones by breaking fat and uses ketones for energy need of the body. this metabolic state is known as ketosis.

Disadvantages of Ketogenic diet:

The ketogenic diet gives us many benefits but in some cases, it may cause some side effects. But generally, side effects caused by the ketogenic diet are not severe and will be gone after some time. Following are the disadvantages –

  1. In the initial week after we start a ketogenic diet, we may face symptoms like intense hunger cravings, mood swings, sleep disorder, fuzziness, etc. All these are known as keto flu and usually gone in one week.
  2. Youth under eighteen years are not allowed to have a ketogenic diet.
  3. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are also not advised to follow the ketogenic diet.

Obesity is a problem from which many are suffering these days. Many solutions are getting suggested by researchers to help individuals in fat loss. The ketogenic diet is one such solution that helps us to remove fat faster. We change our diet to a low carb diet to induce the metabolic state known as ketosis. In ketosis, our body starts burning fat and we get a lean body in the shortest time.

The ketogenic diet is beneficial to reduce the risk of many diseases and make our body more active and healthy. Some side effects can be seen due to our body adapting to the ketogenic diet which usually goes after one week. Some scenarios are there in which we don’t advise you to follow a keto diet like pregnant, breastfeeding mothers, individuals on medication, etc. So consult your physician before following the diet.
